A principle of preference that determines what is important, what should be sought, and what should be avoided.

Belief

The Internal Roadmap

An explanation of how the world works in relation to a value. It guides decisions and actions.

Benefit

The Core Reward

The human need (such as safety or autonomy) that a value helps satisfy.

Trade-off

The Inherent Cost

The inherent cost or price of a value. In its healthy form, the benefit still outweighs the trade-off. When pushed beyond healthy limits, the trade-off distorts into its shadow.

Shadow Expression

The Systemic Distortion

The distorted manifestation of a value after its trade-off overwhelms the benefit it once provided.

Read the premise below carefully, then apply the framework of the Thematic Matrix from this lesson to map out the foundational architecture of the thematic arc.

STORY PREMISE

A society lives under an authoritarian system that maintains order by suppressing the truth about a genocide committed years earlier. Citizens are taught a carefully constructed version of history and cling to it because believing it makes them feel safe. Fear of chaos, guilt, and social collapse keeps everyone obedient, silent, and emotionally imprisoned. But beneath the surface, the system is beginning to fracture, and the truth can no longer remain buried.
